I believe that counselling is a conversation which follows its own path, taking us to places we could not go on our own. Participants in a genuine conversation cannot predict the twist and turns that will be taken. Counselling is often a frank discussion of what it means to be alive, to meet setbacks, to face dilemmas and to feel difficult emotions. Truths will be revealed about realities of which we were half aware; things that could not be changed and opportunities that we were afraid to consider. Change and growth are possible with a counsellor who is experienced in exploring many pathways. Some pass through a dark place, some through a dizzy openness were there are too many possibilities, some places are an encounter the absurd and they prompt both tears and laughter.
